Quote of the weekend
"I'm not the world's greatest expert, but I would have thought that the wizards, witches, trolls, unicorns, hidden worlds, jumping chocolate frogs, owl mail, magic food, ghosts, broomsticks and spells would have given her a clue?"

-- Terry Pratchett, on J.K. Rowling's claim in a recent Time interview that she didn't realize Harry Potter was fantasy until after the first book was published

Um. I don't read nearly as much fantasy as when I was a teenager (my recent binge of all six Harry Potter books in eight days is the most pleasure reading I've had time for in the past year or so!), but I've still read a lot. But I don't think I've EVER read a fantasy novel in which knights and ladies Morris danced to 'Greensleeves.'

Neil Gaiman had an interesting post on the topic here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/officialgaiman/213522.html

Hrm, very interesting. The comments (in the LJ feed, not NG's blog) make some good points as well. But my favorite has to be this one, simply because I came up with the same punchline as I was reading the comment:

She may not have thought to herself while writing the story, "Hey, I'm writing a fantasy story" — IME, most authors don't think that way (at least, the ones I've had the honor of meeting and/or studying with). I mean, it may occur to them that if it has spaceships it's science fiction and if it has guns and horses it's a Western (and if it has both, it's Firefly), but I don't think it determines the course of what they write.

You read the HP novels?

So, this means I can make references to the book that you will actually understand now?

:)
